Bathing
Bathing for rats is generally not necessary.
Self grooming champions
Rats are very clean animals and spend a significant amount of time grooming themselves. They keep their fur clean and their oils help maintain healthy skin.
Baths disrupt natural oils
Bathing them with shampoo can strip away these natural oils, potentially drying out their skin. This can lead to irritation and even skin problems.
Bathing is a stressful experience
Being bathed can be a stressful experience for rats. They can find the water and unfamiliar sensations scary.
Exceptions where a bath might be needed
- Elderly or sick rats: If your rat is old or sick and struggles to groom themself, a shallow ‘sponge bath’ with gentle warm water might be helpful.
- Extremely dirty situations: If your rat gets into something sticky or smelly that they can’t clean off themselves, a quick bath might be necessary.
